These maps define the potentiometric surface, which is much like a topographic contour map but defines the distribution of potential energy in the groundwater system. Each contour, or equipotential, represents a line of equal hydraulic head. To first approximation, groundwater flows down-gradient (from high to low hydraulic head).

At an early 2009 GMA-9 meeting, it was discussed that a potentiometric (water level) map of the Middle Trinity Aquifer constructed during the ongoing drought would provide useful information. All GCDs in the GMA agreed to participate and send the authors water-level data collected from the Middle Trinity Aquifer during the Spring of 2009.

On the 2018 map, potentiometric elevations range from 279 ft in Barnwell County to -41 ft in southern Jasper County, and the potentiometric surface indicates groundwater flow is generally toward the southeast. The interpretation of the potentiometric surface is limited to the more densely populated southern half of Escambia County and represents the semi-confined zone from which most of the county's drinking water is withdrawn. the SWM-19 form and recent potentiometric map. Potentiometric map

A water table map shows the spatial distribution of water levels in wells in an unconfined aquifer, and is a type of potentiometric surface map. Water level maps for both confined and unconfined aquifers are typically referred to as potentiometric surface maps.

This potentiometric surface map was constructed from water-level measurements made in 503 wells and 5 surface-water proxy sites at the end of the normal wet season (September), when groundwater levels are typically at annual high levels. Groundwater levels in 6 wells were adjusted for salinity (see legend). Potentiometric Map The highest water levels are in the northwest corner and the lowest in the southeast, therefore the direction of groundwater movement is towards the southeast. Potentiometric Surface Mapping (1:48000) This series, created to provide e-products (such as GIS coverages) for quick release includes: Maps and digital coverage of unconsolidated and/or bedrock potentiometric surface lines A potentiometric surface is the imaginary plane where a given reservoir of fluid will "equalize out to" if allowed to flow.
